Permission Denied
Fix role-based access errors in alice — admin, owner, and member permission issues
Permission Denied
What You See
You try to perform an action in the alice dashboard (or in Slack) and see one of these:
- "Permission denied -- admin role required"
- "Only the workspace owner can perform this action"
- "You do not have permission to manage sources"
- "Insufficient role for this operation"
Quick Fix
Ask your workspace owner to promote you. The owner can go to Settings > Members, find your name, and change your role to admin.
Detailed Diagnosis
Understanding Roles
alice has three roles. Your role is assigned based on how you joined the workspace:
| Role | How You Get It | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | First person from the Slack workspace to sign in | Everything -- billing, delete org, transfer ownership |
| Admin | Promoted by owner via Settings > Members | Manage sources, members, scheduled reports, monitors |
| Member | Anyone else from the workspace who signs in | Run skills, create skills, view dashboard and logs |
Common Permission Errors
"Cannot manage sources" (member trying to connect/disconnect)
Source management requires admin or owner. Members can run skills against existing sources but cannot add, edit, or remove source connections.
"Cannot manage members" (member trying to change roles)
Only admin and owner can invite, promote, demote, or remove workspace members.
"Owner-only action" (admin trying to manage billing)
Billing and plan changes are restricted to the owner role. This includes upgrading, downgrading, canceling, and viewing invoices.
"Cannot delete skill" (member trying to delete)
Members can create and edit skills but cannot delete them. Ask an admin or owner to delete the skill.
Checking Your Role
- Go to Settings > Members in the dashboard
- Find your name in the member list
- Your role is displayed next to your name
If you do not see the Members page at all, you are a member (the page is visible but role changes are restricted to admin/owner).
Transferring Ownership
If the original owner has left the company or no longer has access:
- The owner can transfer ownership from Settings > Members > Transfer Ownership
- If the owner is unreachable, email support@alicehasnoidea.com with proof of Slack workspace admin access
